It was my first deer season to hunt so I was very inexperienced. On a warm, sunny afternoon in November of 2014, my man decided to join me on the hunt. Since it was warm, I wasn’t sure if we’d see anything but wouldn’t know unless we tried.
After gearing up and spraying down, we headed out to the blind. While I got set up inside, he hung up two scent bombs. Once he was settled, I got the gun up and ready just incase a buck came out.
Whitetail Moment
It was still early, so we spent some time talking and just enjoy being together. While lost in the moment, I happened to look to my left and saw antlers coming out of the tree line. My heart began to race and he said, “Get Ready Baby”. He made his way toward us, so I raised the gun and tried to steady my breathing.
Once he got in my shooting lane, about 25 yards away, I aimed and pulled the trigger. He dropped right in his tracks, of course I did hit him high in the spine. I was overcome with excitement and emotion. I wanted to rush out there but my husband said we should wait. After what felt like hours, we finally packed up and got out.
When I walked up to him, I could then admire him up close. He wasn’t a huge buck, but that didn’t matter to me. He was still a beautiful and healthy 7 point buck who was still in the rut stage. His rack was a little past his ears as well. I shot him with my husband’s Remington model 700 rifle. It was most definitely a special moment to treasure. Not only getting my first deer ever, but sharing it with the man I love.
After admiring him and giving thanks to God, we got the 4-wheeler so we could get him to the house for processing. I felt so blessed for this experience and thankful for being able to provide fresh meat for our freezer. Sure it’s nice to get that desired trophy, but it’s the meat that feeds the family.
A hunt to remember…
It was truly a hunt to remember. From tagging my first ever deer to sharing it with someone special. I will always cherish every hunt, because there’s always something to learn. On this hunt I learned that it’s not good to fletch when shooting because it can mess your shot up.
