Tomboy is an understatement to who I am and how I was raised! My daddy never pushed me to wear frilly dresses or try to be something he knew I wasn’t. He would take me hunting, fishing, shooting guns and everything just like my brothers once I hit about 12 years old. To this day my Mamaw still tells me “isn’t all of the things you enjoy for boys?” Just call me one of the boys!

Most Memorable Hunt

Levi’s 1st Buck

I wanted my first article to be about my most memorable hunt which isn’t about me at all. My son Levi killed his first deer, which was a nice 7 point buck, when he was only 7 years old. He hit it in the chest with one shot of 20 gauge buckshot. Yes, much like my clothing brands represent, he killed it in front of hound dogs running it!

Family Hunt

We started taking Levi shooting at about the age of 3 and teaching him gun safety. To this day, he handles a gun more respectfully than most adults I know. He is quite the shot if I might add! He was set up on a stand with his daddy and I was around the corner from them covering the other end of the road. I could hear the hounds getting close so I drew my gun up to get ready listening very closely but I never seen or heard a deer.

He got it…

Within seconds, I heard one shot go off and my heart started pounding. Could Levi have actually got to shoot at his first deer? This was going through my head but I was not prepared for what awaited! My husband Josh called me on the radio and said three simple words “he got it!” Once I knew it was safe to come around the corner, I took off running! Levi was so excited but not like I expected. He was so calm, grinning from ear to ear, but calm. I ran over and gave him a hug and told him how proud I was of him!

He then showed me a spot in the sand of deer blood, deer tracks and dog prints all together. He thought it was so cool so obviously I had to get a photo of it. He called everybody to tell them and then he helped his daddy skin it out. Growing up I was always told “if you’re big enough to shoot it then you are big enough to skin it.” He never even flinched!

I am so proud of my son and even more proud that just a few months later he shot his first Tom turkey by himself at 8 years old with one shot but I’ll save those juicy details for another article and time.

My Advice

Proud Mama
Proud Moment

My advice is, take them in the woods and teach them how to survive on their own! These traditions we enjoy are hated by so many and people are constantly trying to take away our rights. Fight for what you believe in and fight for this way of life! God bless!

  1. Its like you read my mind! You appear to know so much about this, like you wrote the book
in it or something. I think that you can do with a few pics to drive
the message home a bit, but instead of that, this is wonderful blog.
A great read. I’ll definitely be back.
