On a cold, cloudy January day, it was the final week of the 2018-2019 deer season. I was up early getting ready to take my kid to school. I looked out the window and what I saw made me rush to the back door. At first I wasn’t sure what buck it was but he had many tines on his nice rack.
While I eased the sliding door open, my 11 year old got my camera ready. When the buck got behind a tree, I got set up for the shot with my husband’s 7 mm mag. My son took it upon himself to film for me this time.
After missing yet again, I rushed back to the door frame. It worked last time so why not again. With the last shot he disappeared from my scope. Right then I hear “You Dropped Him!” from my son. That’s when I spotted him move so I loaded another round incase he got up. I didn’t really have time to wait so I grabbed my .243, put on some boots, and rushed out there.

Hunting in Pjs
Halfway out there I began to laugh at the fact that I was going out to the field in pjs. After giving him a fatal shot, I made sure he had expired. Then I noticed the time so I rushed back to the house. I was beyond excited that I had just shot a 10 point buck.
Once the baby was fed, I gathered my stuff together and dressed him warmly then we headed out to retrieve the buck. Yes I had to take him with me since no one else was home. At least he did good on his first 4-wheeler ride. While assessing what I had to do, I couldn’t help but admire this beautiful animal.

He was a nice 10 point, not as old as the 9 point but still a healthy stud. Since I’ve never retrieved a buck by myself before, I had to figure it out as I went along. I managed to get the rope secured enough around him and his rack up off the ground. I sure didn’t want that damaged. It was challenging doing that with the baby on my back but I succeeded.

Anything is Possible
Back at the house, I laid the baby down for a nap so I could field dress the buck. Before doing that, I had to admire him a bit more. I also gave thanks to God for allowing me to tag out with another great buck. He showed me that anything is possible, even when things seem impossible. I learned that the only limits we have is our own mindset.
[…] I got my son to school and fed the baby then loaded up with straps to retrieve my buck. I stood there with the baby admiring him and wondering how I’m going to do this. He was a younger buck but still a beautiful 10 point. I decided on a plan of action and got him back. So with that, this Huntin’ Momma Tags Out. […]
